What is immunization?

Immunization is the process of the body forming protection from a disease, usually through vaccination, where a vaccine stimulates the immune system to create antibodies. Vaccination is the act of receiving the vaccine, and immunization is the outcome of that process, leading to safety from infection or serious illness. Immunization is a crucial public health measure that protects individuals, communities, and future generations from preventable diseases.

Why immunization?

Getting vaccinated (immunized) is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from dangerous diseases. You can get the shots you need even if you don’t have health insurance.

Pediatric immunization

Immunization is crucial for keeping children healthy. The recommended child and adolescent schedules urge vaccinations starting at birth through 24 months of age, with boosters and catch-up vaccines during the teenage years and into adulthood. Eligible children can receive vaccines for free through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program. Learn more on our Resources page.

Adult immunization

Vaccines during adulthood help to keep the body’s immunity effective and up to date. Factors such as age, job, lifestyle, travel, or underlying health conditions can also increase risk for certain vaccine-preventable diseases. Eligible adults can receive vaccines for free through the Vaccines for At Risk Adults (VFAAR) program. Learn more on our Resources page.
